Hits The Heart
Ruby Rodgers
A vulnerable expression of the experience of youth in our planet’s current state.
Why I wrote this song
‘Hits The Heart’ is inspired by some of the most passionate, resilient young people that I’ve ever met. It came to me after spending a month with them, and seeing the raw, crippling feelings that climate anxiety causes. And to tell the truth, it broke my heart.
As one of the oldest of the 8, I shared this frustration and distress, myself and the others, so afraid for how our lives would turn out due to the rapidly declining state of our environment. And then I felt this overwhelming sadness, because we are only children, yet our futures are already falling apart in our hands, and the worst part is, we are not the ones to blame. I wrote, about and for those 7 kids and the millions of others, for myself and our stories. A call to action, a cry for help, through song.
About me as an artist
Ruby Rodgers is making waves in the music world. She has already performed on major stages across Australia and internationally, performing at the United Nations Headquarters, for the Groundswell Change Makers Event, Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action and more.
A gifted songwriter and storyteller, she contributed her own original songs to a film she was a part of ‘Future Council’ – inspired by the other incredible people around her.
Her debut single, Hits the Heart was released in December of 2024 under EMI Australia / Universal Music. Later, in May of 2025 she presented a TEDx Talk on the power of youth voice and connection to innocence in creating a better world – and that same day, her debut EP ‘Crisis’ was released.
With a passion for music and a drive to inspire change, Ruby’s journey is only just beginning.
About the music video
The ‘Hits The Heart’ music video heavily displays the juxtaposition of the beautiful, picturesque scenes of nature from the ‘Future Council’ film with the noisy and busy city of New York. I thought using scenes from the film was crucial, as it put faces to the names I mentioned in the song, and it showed viewers real people who are, and will continue to be, affected by our collective inaction.
It was so important to me that the music video remained raw and intimate, and vulnerable at times, because I wanted to put on display the unfiltered emotions that so many people are feeling. But more than anything I wanted to show others that being vulnerable and honest is not something to ever be ashamed of, because it’s what makes us human, and humanity is what we so desperately need right now.
