Speak

MAGNETS

A shimmering anthem inspired by the environmental impact of fast fashion.

Why I wrote this song

“I wrote “Speak” because I was deeply moved by the environmental repercussions of fast fashion. Housebound during a flare in my disability, I self-taught myself to sew. However, the process began an education far deeper into the fashion industry, including the staggering waste and exploitation within it.

I wrote “Speak” to amplify the sense of urgency I felt, but did so alongside a soundscape of hope. Though the lyrics are heavy, the soundscape is sunshine and warmth, evoking how positive taking action can feel. As an advocate for change and a believer in the power of art to provoke reflection, this song represents my commitment to fostering a more conscientious and compassionate world.”

About me as an artist

MAGNETS is the solo project of indie-pop artist and scientist Siobhan McGinnity. Her music, described as ‘addictive,’ ‘simmering,’ and steeped in ‘retro love,’ features shimmering guitars and synth layers.

The first two singles from her upcoming album (set to release in 2024) received widespread acclaim, with Rolling Stone naming one as video of the week, Pilerats ranking both in their top 10, and triple j unearthed placing Speak in their top 5 songs, the later also earning the coveted weekly ‘Wild One’ spot on ABC’s iconic rage.

With a community of 37k TikTok followers who share Siobhan’s passions for sustainability, fashion, and music, MAGNETS inspires change through art and advocates for a more inclusive world.

About the music video

The concept for the ‘Speak’ music video vividly portrays environmental urgency. Co-directed by Magnets and Nick Mckk, it juxtaposes the man-made world, symbolised by mountains of clothing handcrafted by Siobhan, with Melbourne’s pristine beaches. Throughout, Magnets embarks on a poignant journey from playful naivety to the sobering realisation of personal responsibility, culminating in her presence in a bin. Childhood nostalgia elements, inspired by Playschool, underscore the impact of global warming on future generations. Nick Mckk masterfully translates these concepts into a narrative of urgency, filled with colourful hope.

The environmental organisations I admire or support

Green Music Australia has been an organisation I’ve admired since conception. Their ability to sustain, grow and build such a wonderful momentum of change in our industry is admirable. Ethical Clothing Australia is another organisation. They provide accreditation for manufacturers that meet their guidelines, and resources to help Australian’s buy more ethically.
