Window To The Sky
Oceanique
A journey to find the window to the sky
Why we wrote this song
This was the first song we wrote after moving to Melbourne in 2023. It came out of a time where there was a lot of unknown, we’d just moved to a big city and weren’t sure what was ahead of us. This song is for that feeling of wanting everything you’ve ever wished for to come at you all at once. And wanting to be out in nature surrounded by it’s beauty and take it all in.
Maddy and I both grew up in a tiny little town called Walpole in WA’s south west. It’s a town of 500 people, surrounded by trees and beautiful beaches. We write a lot about nature and the landscapes that surround us, that imagery often weaves it’s way into our songs. We both care so deeply about the environment as its in our bones, that calling to head back to the deep forest and take it all in so we feel very strongly about looking after it. It’s something we’ve grown up with, learnt about through our generations and will continue to fight to protect.
About us as artists
Originally from regional Western Australia, now based in Naarm/Melbourne, twin sisters Maddy and Jess of Oceanique create music that blends heartfelt storytelling with seamless harmonies. The duo’s sound draws comparisons to the sibling harmonies of First Aid Kit and The Staves, combining folk traditions with warm, reflective melodies reminiscent of the vast country sky.
Since their debut in 2019, Oceanique has become a rising act in the Australian folk music scene. Highlights include winning Port Fairy Folk Festival’s ‘Emerging Artist of the Year’ (2024) and Folk Alliance Australia’s ‘Youth Artist of the Year’ (2022). Their captivating live performances have graced renowned festivals such as the National Folk Festival, Woodford Folk Festival, and Port Fairy Folk Festival as well as supporting celebrated artists, including The Waifs at Geelong Arts Centre.
International recognition followed with six showcases at Folk Alliance International 2024 in Kansas City and a highly anticipated official showcase at Folk Alliance International in Montreal in 2025. Their debut album, Would The Light Hold Me (2023), and a 2024 live EP received critical acclaim, showcasing their evocative songwriting and magnetic harmonies.
About the music video
We wanted to create a journey to find the ‘window to the sky’ and all the beautiful places along the way. We really wanted to highlight the spectacular landscape and scenery of the Great Dividing Range.
We tea stained and hand painted a map that would take us on a trek up the mountain to find our ‘Window to the sky’.
This song was written around a time of unknown and wanting anything but the place we were in, so we really wanted to create a journey to finding the place we were dreaming about.
